Last December, Peter Elst began a podcast named Skip Intro. He managed to get out two episodes before life caught up with him. If you haven’t checked it out yet, listen to it here. It’s great stuff. Peter has this cool European accent that makes whatever he says sound really deep and intellectual – at least to uncultured Americans like myself. 😉
I’ve also been thinking of starting a podcast, but I could only see the same thing happening if I tried it alone. I’d probably manage to squeeze a few episodes out and then it would start sinking deep into the pile of “things to do”. I know myself. But still, the idea wouldn’t go away. I even went out and got a decent headset and mic and made some test recordings, but I couldn’t bring myself to start something I knew was doomed.
Then, a few weeks ago I saw that Peter was looking for a co-host for Skip Intro. I applied and got the job! Well, it wasn’t that formal. I’ve worked with Peter on writing projects (he was tech reviewer for Extending Flash MX 2004) and hung out at conferences, and we’ve conversed on line over the years, etc. So we were both pretty happy about doing a podcast together.
Peter’s going to be wrapping up some deadlines and travelling around for various conferences and other things over the next month or so, so I agreed to do most of the next couple of episodes. That should work out well. Just about the time I’m hitting the point where I’d probably quit on my own, he’ll be getting back into it and we’ll start to do some more interactive stuff.
The next episode is mostly all recorded and just needs to be put all together. Should have this done over the weekend and on the air by early next week. And then we plan to get another episode out after FiTC, and every couple of weeks or so after that. We’ll see how much we can really keep up the schedule, but it’s definitely got a better shot with two of us.
Oh, and as a bit of a teaser, the next episode features an interview with a bit of a Flash celebrity. \m/
I’d like to hear a Flash podcast with at least four different people contributing to the discussion. I haven’t listened to Skip Intro yet, so maybe you guys pulled it off, but I find that podcasts with only one or two guys tends to have less life and varied opinions (and the discussion that goes along with those opinions) than one with a larger group. An example of a podcast that fits this description is This Week in Tech with Leo Laporte and all those tech guys. Lots of discussion and shared opinions that can go in many directions.
lol Keith, didn’t realize my European accent sounded that sophisticated 😉
I originally started the podcast as a quick report on what’s happening in the community — some news, events and reviews. We might well make it more of a round table discussion going forward, have guests on and do more interviews.
Really looking forward to working with Keith on this. Think its pretty cool to get perspectives from across both sides of the pond. Next step is to get ourselves an Asia Pacific correspondent 😛
Yeah Josh, I love the TWIT family of podcasts. Lots of energy and really interesting discussions and news. More like a radio show than a podcast. I’d love to do something that cool. We’ll see what we can build up to. 🙂
Skip Intro is great! Peter Elst does an outstanding job and now that Keith is joining in on it I’m sure it will only get better. Keith, I just realized the Flash Math Creativity book was written by you (I so wanted to get the book but never did) are the concepts still applicable now that AS 3 is out? I would love to get the book if they are. I just got my copy of ActionScript 3.0 Anim. Making Things Move…The forework alone is a great source of inspiration…anyway, great work guys! You guys are my inspiration to, after getting home everyday after a tiresome and exausting day at work, sit in front of my PC and try to learn as much as possible about Flash, AS and the likes.
for that I thank you.
Rosnel, I only wrote one chapter of Flash Math Creativity. There were something like 15 authors in total. I did edit the second version to convert all the Flash 4 / Flash 5 / AS1 code to AS2. For some of those, it shouldn’t be too hard to convert up to AS3.
Great! I’m going to get it as well then. BTW Keith, maybe you didn’t get a change of reading a previous post I did but…out of curiosity, how come amazon (and some other online book sellers) do not have the cover image of your AS3 Ani. Making Things Move book on the book’s page?
Yeah, I don’t know what’s going on with the image on Amazon.
Cool…I really don’t like 1 man show podcasts that much. And with you 2 guys doing this, it’ll probably be a quality show…very nice! Looking forward to hear the first episode..what’s the ETA on it ? \M/ huh ? Let me think…who do i know who would be described by that ? ROCK ON!
