Flash 8 for Dummies

If you had asked me this morning which Flash book I might purchase next, it is highly unlikely that I would have answered Flash 8 for Dummies. Yet, I just walked out of Barnes and Noble with a freshly purchased copy in my hands.

Why? Well, several months ago, Ellen Finkelstein contacted me and asked me if I was interested in being in the book, and asked for a couple of educational FLAs. I said sure, sent the FLAs, and didn’t think much about it after that. So today I was in the book store and noticed the book there and remembered the earlier conversation. I flipped through the book, and there I was!

Chapter 16: “Ten Flash Designers to Watch”

I’m a designer now, eh? OK. At any rate, nice to be in there. Wonder who the other nine are? Here’s the list, in the order given in the book:

Ola Berger (http://www.goober.nu)
Hillman Curtis (http://www.hillmancurtis.com)
Joshua Davis (http://www.joshuadavis.com)
Anthony Eden (http://www.arseiam.com)
Ben Hantoot (http://www.webfeatsdesign.com)
Shane Mielke (http://www.pixelranger.com)
Keith Peters (http://www.bit-101.com)
Ellen Pronk (http://www.lfs.nl/preview)
Micael Reynaud (http://www.dunun.com)
Craig Swann (http://www.crashmedia.com)

I actually know some of those people!

    Thats cool.
I just called my local BN in worcester and they don’t seem to have it yet… but their web related section is small.

  2. Funny how we both ended up at B&N today looking at Flash books.

I ended up buying this new book called “Making things move” or something or rather 🙂 … because:

1.) The author writes well and is understandable 2.) The topics are useful and 3.) It’s not a 1000+ rebundle of documentation (Shame on you Macromedia … you are killing trees!)

… but seriously, nice job. I know ericd already posted a review, but I’ll probably post one as well.

  3. Keith Peters says:

Note, I’m not particularly recommending the Dummies book, unless maybe you’ve never used Flash before 🙂

The Making Things Move one, though, that’s a keeper!

  4. James, check out the FOE Flash 8 Foundation book if you are new to Flash, otherwise wait for the Flash 8 Essentials.

If you don’t like to read, you could always attend gskinner’s 2 day workshop on Flash 8 features.

Also, I heard that moock may be writing an AS 3 book (probably be out end of next year).

  5. Colby says:

So would this be a bad time to post some links to my private collection of Keith Peter’s design work?

  6. Keith Peters says:

I don’t believe you have any such thing, Colby. I challenge you. But if you do, it should be worth a laugh.

  7. James says:

I actually don’t need any beginner Flash books, I have been using Flash since Flash 4… and these days I do quite a bit of Flash Development.
