PrimalScript 4.0 released.

I’ve been testing this version for a couple of months now, and as much as I liked it before, I love it now. It’s quite solid and got some really cool new features.

Not to get into a “my editor is better than yours” but some quick comparisons.

It’s not FDT. FDT was written from the ground up as an AS project tool. Perfect for large Flash projects. PS handles something like 30 different languages. It has some pretty useful project features (I use them all the time), but it can also be used as a quick and dirty xml, php, text or whatever editor.

It compares much more directly with SE|PY. My personal feeling is that it blows SE|PY out of the water in terms of features, stability, functionality and professional feel. But SE|PY has its loyal followers, so to each his own.

PrimalScript now comes in three flavors. Standard, Pro and Enterprise (not yet released). Standard, at $169 will be good enough for most Flash coders. The biggest thing you’ll miss from Pro would be the FTP client and visual file comparison. If those are worth an additional $80 to you, or you’d use some of the other non-Flash features in Pro, go for it. There’s a comparison chart on the site too, so you can decide.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this release, 4.0, is an overall upgrade. It doesn’t really have much ActionScript specific stuff in it beyond what was in 3.1. However, Sapien will now start working on version 4.1, which will be an ActionScript-targeted release. It is my understanding that 4.1 will be a free upgrade from 4.0. I’ll have more info on the upcoming 4.1 features when I know something.

So download a trial, use it for a month. I did almost two years ago, and I still love it.
