August is BIT-101 month.

Hard to believe, but I started www.bit-101.com four years ago this month. A little trivia: the first few experiments were actually part of my former site www.kpwebdesign.com (if there’s anything there now, it’s not mine). I then decided to get a new domain, wrote up a long list of potential high-tech-sounding names, crossed out the ones that were taken, and somehow ended up with BIT-101. I purchased the domain in early September, and it went live on September 11, 2001. Yikes.

Anyway, although the domain didn’t actually start until September, the concept was born in August, and the first experiments are from August.

To celebrate, I’m going to try and revive the site. As you know, if you have visited lately, it hasn’t been updated in months. My goal for August is to have an experiment every single day of the month! The last time I batted a thousand like that was November 2001. We’ll see how long I can keep it going.

Also, in my FlashForward goodie bag was a CD for something called the Radical Concept Server. I still haven’t looked at what’s on it, but the case it came it was awesome! I ordered a bunch, and if you purchase a BIT-101 Source CD, it will come with one of these cases.

It’s actually a clear plastic sleeve that the CD slides into, and snaps securely. There’s a little trigger on the back end, which you pull to pop the CD out for easy removal. I love these things!

Cool.. is there gonna be any flash 8 specific stuff? 😉

  2. Keith Peters says:

As soon as Flash 8 is released, you can bet I’ll start posting Flash 8 content.

Sweet man. It’s funny about the case, my coworker couldn’t believe that I had never seen it before.

I don’t know what was originally on the disc, but I took it out and I use it for when I travel and need to bring a CD/DVD.

Any chance you could post where you bought them from?

    I got them here: http://www.meritline.com
Not a bad price for 50 of them.

  6. Danny Miller says:

    Now you must die.

“You have failed your attempt to update each day”
um… what site are you looking at?

  8. Keith Peters says:

Are you not seeing new content for Aug 1, 2, 3, 4?

  9. Bob Henninger says:

Congrats on the four years. We’re looking forward to four more!

Enjoy reading your blogs and the inspiration from BIT-101 Labs. It has inspired many-a-night staying up to 2 am (and longer) saying, “well, let me just see what this would do and THEN I’ll go to bed before I have to get up for work.” Thanks, man.

I was wondering if/when you might fix the area in the Lab that used to display your comments on the particular experiment. It’s informative to know what your striving for or playing with or if a experiment is just there.

Perhaps this was already mentioned before, and I apologize if so.

Keep up the great work and the apparent joy you have in doing so.

  10. Keith Peters says:

the comments show up for me. if any part of the site doesn’t work for you, please email me. I’d like to find out what’s going on and fix it.

  11. Danny Miller says:

I see them now, I didn’t see any updates on the 3rd or 4th though.

    Anyway,
A suggestion I forgot to mention to you. Don’t have arrow keys as controls for your experiments anymore. If I’m on the list view it keeps scrolling up or down when I use the arrow keys.

    It’s just a suggestion,
    -Danny
