A couple of nights ago I downloaded the Popforge audio library and had a play with it. I couldn’t get a peep out of it. But then last night dug around a bit more and found the sample files in the repository. This gave me the kickstart I needed to actually start doing something.
A couple hours later, and I had this:
[kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.bit-101.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/minimalsynth.swf” width=”330″ height=”320″/]
All I’m using is the AudioBuffer class to play back a set of samples based on various settings of sliders. When the set is finished, I jump to the next slider in the sequencer and crete the next set of samples. As I’m creating the samples, I’m also drawing the graph.
I know nothing about sound, but I know a bit about trig and how to manipulate a sine wave. π There are probably names for the various things I’m doing. No idea. I just know it has a certain look and makes a certain sound. Pretty neat.
Also, you can see a new MinimalComp, the IndicatorLight, and a new feature of the PushButton – it is toggleable. I have a couple other new MinimalComps I’ll be releasing soon too. Personally, this is the exact type of app I had in mind when creating the components. So this is especially fun for me.
Eventually, I’d like to see if I could begin to replicate something like the Kaossilator in Flash! Or at least a small percentage of it. π If anyone has a spare Kaossilator kicking around, or a couple hundred bucks to donate to the research, send it my way!
Pretty cool!
Kaos have another interactive pad thing thats more suited for samples and effects. I want one but I’m afraid I wouldnt use it for anything more than playing around π

Hey cool. You build some kind of FM-Synth or Ringmodulator, I am not sure π I hope you continue. It’s fun!
This is cool, you could really make music with this! I found myself tapping a drumbeat to it and dragging the sliders around also reveals that you can actually play this thing as an instrument! MIDI-interface in Flash anyone?
That’s totally brilliant for a few hours messing about!
Makes me want to try messing about with popforge again, I had tried before but got nowhere too…
Thanks Andre. Great work on the library. I don’t know what I built either. π But it’s great fun, and I’ll definitely be doing more. See you in Toronto, right?
amazing… sucked me in!
Sensational!
Man, this is really awesome! I can see so many possibilities with this library. Thanks for sharing a pretty cool example using the thing, and thanks to Andre for creating it. I love playing with your example too! It’s fun seeing what tunes it creates with the random button.
Amazing stuff, Keith!
that’s awesome! Could you explain a little on how you drew the sound wave visualizer?
