Spider Defense

Had an idea for a game in mind the last couple of weeks. So started putting it together. Here’s the playing field and the bad guys.

OK, they don’t seem so bad now. In fact, I think they are kind of cute. :) But just wait til they start shooting green laser beams out of their heads!

I’ve been wanting to do some game dev for a while now. Been inspired by a couple of game blogs, like Jobe Makar’s and Richard Lord’s.

I really like where this is going and have a lot of ideas for it. I think it’s going to be somewhat along the lines of onslaught (be careful clicking on that one – hours will fly by like seconds).

  • Digging the concept, maybe the next 8000/mo tower defense with some ads :)

Whoah…what’s happening at the far end of the field? Looks like the spiders fall off the surface and start travel on the “underside” of the terrain.

I know it’s just a prototype…just curious. It’s all pretty cool. Is the terrain generated fractally? I’m sure you don’t want to give away secrets, but I’d love a high-level overview of how you’re doing the surface detection for the legs so that they always hit in the right spot.

  • Really cool, but you may want to rethink the way the “heads” look :P

  • Curse you Keith! Curse you for introducing me to Onslaught! ;)

The walking algorithm you used looks pretty good, except when they’re traveling up a hill. Perhaps you could pre-detect where their leg will collide with the ground in front of them, and if the delta x is smaller than some-specified number of pixels, they would step a little bit higher in the y direction to account for this? Just a thought…
